A Primer on Android Pay and Google Wallet
New York Time's Mike Isaac covers the announcement yesterday about Android Pay, a competitor to Apple Pay.

"To use Android Pay, smartphone users with up-to-date versions of the Android operating system will be able to load Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover cards onto their phones. From there, they will be able to wave the phone over the terminals in more than 700,000 stores around the United States to pay for items. Android Pay will also work inside mobile apps from participating developers."

Where Banks Need to Focus If They Want to Outperform
Kevin Halsey, senior analyst at the consulting firm Capital Performance Group, lists four areas banks should focus on to beat the competition: 1) revenue growth 2) scale 3) loan growth 4) core deposit funding. Capital Performance Group analyzed three peer groups to come up with their results and found that "median return on average equity ratios for these three peer groups in 2014 were all in the single digits, ranging between 7.29% (community banks) and 8.90% (midsize banks)." They added that "banks must devise plans to get above 10% to attract the capital needed to support growth. In other words, they need to be more like the high performers, which achieved median ROAE ratios of between 12.03% and 13.84%."
