We talked to Shara Evans, technology futurist, about how digital devices will change over the next 10 years. You can read the transcript below.

What kind of devices will we be looking at over the next 10 years?

When I think about the kinds of devices that will be in our everyday lives over the next 10 years, I’m really looking at things like augmented and virtual reality. A lot of people have started to play with these technologies, but they will be integrated into our everyday lives increasingly as smart glasses and eventually as smart contacts. And we’ll start to have a digital overlay of information that is superimposed on our vision.

Another major device is going to be robotics and artificial intelligence, and you almost can’t separate the two. AI is going to be very important. We’re going to see all kinds of software programs that act on our behalf, and that increasingly recognize things about ourselves that we may not even know. For instance, emotions based on facial recognition.

Another major device category is 3D printing. And when people think about 3D printing they might be thinking about things like plastic models or prototypes, but it is has so far advanced from that. There are 3D printers today that are doing metal printing, that goes into rocket ships and propellers for jet engines. There are bio printers that are printing living tissue. And this is just the very very beginning of the 3D printing revolution.

And there are also technologies like biometrics. Biometrics is the art of identifying unique things about us as human beings, like the bone structure in my face, or the tone of my voice, or what my iris looks like, or my finger print. We’re going to see those kind of technologies integrated into a lot of devices as well. And then of course there’s the internet of everything. And that is everything from our kitchen fridge being connected to the net, to having devices that are on the market already like amazon alexa, or google’s home assistant that listen to your voice and take actions in your house for you. And this is really going to impact how we as humans live over the next ten years.

Some of the key technologies that will impact our every day lives over the coming lives include augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, robotics, 3D printing, biometrics, and the internet of everything. Literally connecting all kinds of devices, including our bodies, to the internet.
